We start yesterday when our mate Pinno made an early trip to enjoy the glorious Perthshire summer (3 days in April as a rule) on the golf course with me and Kev. Steve was hibernating or beavering away or something.
Pinno visited (and bounced back perfectly from) every tree on the course. I putted like my 10 year old daughter and Kev's steady play nicked the win up the last. Tuesday night was dubbed "Pinno Pizza" night in the CairnBet residence as we fired up the oven in the garden and we enjoyed half a keg of Brewdog whilst watching the footy. Which proved more enjoyable for me and the boy as Liverpool fans than it did for BookieBaz as an Everton man.
It was a delight to be back at our local track, Perth, in the glorious sunshine for the first day of the 3 day meeting. Unfortunately the weather wasn't enough to bring out a substantial crowd and the business was pretty moderate (a few very lump bets aside).
Starting with the aways we suffered a loss on the day and the books were messy compounded by some lumpy bets, most of which shortened and some of which won. In summary we didn't get any value out of betting away and gave away a few hundred quid. Not the end of the world as we know it but less than ideal overall. Perth however was a different story...
1) Quiet betting heats meant we were struggling to get full liabilities even though we were running 2 pitches. In the first we took enough on the favourite at 8/11 to have a reasonable liability there and we also had a full (actually slightly more than full) liability on Brompton Park which sadly fell badly at the last and was fatally injured. |Condolences to connections and also best wishes for a full recovery to the jockey Dylan Johnston. Sporty Jim (14/1) got the book off to a solid start and Perth threw up a result. Much to the surprise of many books who swear you can't win at Perth!
2) And the results kept coming as outsider of 5, Ubetya, led all until the last but rallied to retake the lead from Shantou Lucky near the line. Shantou was a maximum liability for us along with the favourite Lakota Warrior and we got a fantastic result in what proved to be the busiest race of the day for us all things considered. We also didn't lay the forecast for a small top up.
3) We had 2 max losers (Coach Carter and Casa Tall) and the favourite (Dreams Of Home) was running for us for a reasonable win with Sao and Arvico Bleu the jackpots. I'd imagine there were a few hearts in mouths off course somewhere when Coach Carter was, I believe, matched at 1000 in running and nearly got back up on the line and very possibly would've done without a mistake at the last. Dreams of Hope held on and gave us another move forward. Would it be sour grapes to moan that we laid the forecast? Yep, it probably would be.
4) All of them attracted steady support which makes for small liabilities and a boring book. Absolutely zero hedging required here as couldn't get any of them near a maximum liability. Galia Des Liteaux was our worst loser which isn't saying much and the outsider was our best winner. Also not saying much. The eventual favourite (with us anyway), Complete Unknown was also a small loser and we got another gentle nudge forward with the winner Mahler Mission.
CairnBet homelife break. Just switched on for the footy and the Sky box was on Beeb 1 at start up. Not seen a second of Eastenders for 25 years (when a previous girlfriend insisted on watching every flipping episode) but I had to endure a good 8 seconds of it whilst frantically jabbing 401. One line of (snarled) dialogue "NO WONDER SHE WAS SUICIDAL". Some things, literally, never change. Imagine how much worse she'd have felt if she'd had to watch my putting yesterday.
5) We didn't take many bets but we did lay a substantial one on Zambella at 8/11 which required some ring hedging and a bit more online. It obviously went off 8/13 and another shocking value book was staring us in the face. Fortunately for us it never looked convincing and Gordon Eilliott did us a favour winning with 10/1 shot Daphne Moon which turned out to be our worst winner (and we laid the forecast) but it was clearly a better result than the odds on shot.
6) This was more like it. The patented CairnBet bingo book- 4 losers (Rubytwo for a max, Coreys Courage for half and a couple of small ones with Timetoroe and Cool Rain). Our two best winners were Stop Talking and, surprisingly, the 2nd fav (and winner) Getaway Goldie which gave us a big bonus.
7) Dequall was our final lumpy, shortening, messy book bet and we, again, needed to hedge in the ring with me and Steve grabbing cash for our own 2 man game of follow me, don't follow me to various books to make sure we could get it into liability. We stood it for the max along with World Trip and the eventual favourite was the winner for a small loss which was covered by a small win in the places so the last was a bit of a waste of time as we ended up sitting still.
That'll do for tonight- I'll give my attention to the match/wife where Chelsea and Arsenal's defending appears to be as messy as some of our books. Perth again tomorrow. Same weather, more punters, less messy books please. Thanks. Until then...
