Cartmel 26/8/23 - System of a Down

A mercifully, for you anyway, short piece this morning as I am staying in North Wales with family and will be shortly enjoying the charms of The Great Orme and Llandudno pier.

Cartmel managed to put on a popular enough race to split onw and be able to offer a 7 race card to a virtual sell out. And quite right too. Same again on Monday. No short changed punters here thank goodness.

1) Well, we might a complete mess of this. We took a large liability bet that we should really have offered to take half of. The price immediately collapsed- the win book was bad, the place book was wretched. You live and learn. We dodged the win loss but there was no book value and the small win we had on the jolly, Duleek Street, was annihilated by the place loss and a bit more.

2) Just the 4 runners and we stood Post No Bills for the max and got decent reward on the smashed up 2nd favourite Glory and Honour. Managed to lay the forecast though.

3) Bingo for every book here I think as 4 of the 7 were virtually the same price. We ended up standing Lights Are Green and Eagle Terrace at the top and Old Page at the bottom and got another decent result on what was, effectively, the co fav of 4, Fairlawn Flyer, though the 2nd was an absolute jackpot.

4) Took all 3 at the top of the market on which left the rest of the book brimming with monster wins. Well Educated hit something short for something huge in the book. When Very Excellent went past we were still in jackpot territory. As has been the case for a couple of months now we got chinned late on by 2nd fav Young Merlin for the worst result in the book from a big in running price. When your luck's out...

5) In a crowd full of Roberts betting in The Lake District, Ask Bob and Solway Molly were the inevitable losers and another steady, if not spectacular, winner was chalked up in the shape of Cuzco Du Mathan. Pateen another heartbreaker which was going well throughout but couldn't convert.

6) Heavily stuck into Nadim which was beaten a long way out but we were done on a name and a local trainer combo as Mr Rumbalicious doubled in price just on the off but defied the drift and cost us a chunk holding on from fast finishing Father's Advice

7) And there was no escaping laying the winner in the last either as Our Sam was another Moffatt runner well backed by locals and Samuels alike. Another tale of woe with the 2nd just failing to get up after a late run.

So a tiny win on a busy day which felt like a loss. A very quick run through of our system here. We made a dog's breakfast of the first and escaped on a winning favourite, won nicely on the next 2 on horses we could easily have lost on given they were near the head of the market, a max loss on a 2nd fav, a win on an 11/1 shot which we didn't get full value from, lost in the next when most books won and got battered on 2nd favourite in the last.

All in all a frustrating day- we won on a couple that standard books would lose on, we didn't get our fill on a good result and then lost on what would be considered a very bookie friendly result. Them's the breaks.

Cartmel again on Monday. Until then....
