Newcastle 7/4/23 - The Day We (Nearly) Caught The Train

6:15 alarm call and we couldn't face breakfast. A quick check of the Greggs app gave us sausage butty opportunities at either Dunfermline or Berwick with the minimum of disruption. We opted for Berwick for the sea view. We weren't the only ones.

On track before 11am (which always feels a bit wrong) and we were greeted by more books than we'd expect to see at Aintree next week and, if we hadn't gone for the pre pay discounted betting badge option we might've turned round and popped back to Berwick for lunch as well. No old silver ring betting option as the waltzers were squatting there and the burger van had taken up residence on half of the spur. The going in the picnic area was heavy, mud in places, lots of places, which meant the front line was the only realistic option. We have a middling pick at Newcastle on the flat but we made the front line with 1 pick to spare.

Early betting was disrupted by Hulk, Spiderman and a couple of other indeterminate Marvel dudes- possibly Captain Marvel and Captain America. One of the Captains looked as bored as we felt with a 90 minute pitch in. Hulk may very well have felt the same but had the benefit of a massive green head covering his likely ambivalence. We didn't get a bet off any of them.

1) After we pitched in Steve had 10p with me on the first thing I was going to say. "We're not coming next year" was my view and Steve won his 10p. The dismal betting heat in the first didn't change my view or improve my humour. Obelix for the max and Flight Plan and Galeron for half. The winner, Dear My Friend was barely laid but, then again, that didn't say much and we won the most modest of modest skinners from 2 of our bogeys.

2) Quiet again and I was considering a Spiderman selfie to relieve the boredom. What money we did take was on Shaquille which refused to enter the stalls. Of course. We had nowt of interest in our book, with a couple of small losers at the top and the winner Desert Cop was a disappointingly small winner for us at a price that looked like a jackpot. We have a lead but it's not a big one.

3) The betting picked up but the "Can't Win a Furlong Out Stakes" brought us a loser on a name which beat another loser on a name. Family Fun Day meant every other bet was for either Rainbow Dreamer or Fleurman. My daughter was in Rainbows and it appeared half the Mums and Dads on the course were in the same boat. Sage books will tell us we shouldn't lose on a 10/1 shot. We lost on a 10/1 shot. We had expenses covered but no more.

4) Two maxes, original favourite Forest of Dean and Harrovian. Notre Belle Bete was a very small winner for us and led in the closing stages, Base Note was the absolute jackpot and finished like a train but, like any London commuter knows, it came too late and just failed. It wouldn't be the last time. Small move in the right direction but it felt like a loss.

5) Positive for the max and The Wizard of Eye for the half max. It looked like we were going to lose on another rag as Wizard hit odds on in running but was swallowed up by jolly Berkshire Shadow. Chichester was the absolute jackpot and finished like a train but as every London commuter knows..... etc, etc. A decent win but the jackpot remained tantalisingly elusive.

6) We got stuck into the favourite Manaafith which floated around 11/10 for much of the betting. Fiduciary the other bad result for us and we finally hit a solid win with Queen Aminatu which finished like a train but fortunately arrived on time and for the first time we smelt a decent winning day. Though it may have been the hot dogs.

7) Annaf was the money horse and we were max on it. 3 other liabilities (Harrys Bar, Mums Tipple and Summerghand) though all snack size rather than all you can eat. I'm going to be honest here, Diligent Harry was a cracking winner for us but the biggest potential result of the day, max jackpot Witch Hunter, finished like a train... ach, you know the rest...

All in all a good day, betting improved from race 3 and we had a number of decent wins plus a couple of very good ones. Musselburgh tomorrow, until then....
